Story by Tom Gray, Youth Group Leader and Rocket Enthusiast
Tom and RJ hosted the inaugural Youth Group meetup on 12 June. We had 13 attend and another 4 who signed up but couldn't make it. It was great to see old friends and several new faces. The weather was ideal and we launched a two-liter bottle rocket a dozen times...we had to go twice to refill the 'reaction mass' (water) supply. We also flew kites and tossed frisbees.
The kids organized themselves and held a spirited discussion about the purpose and future events of the Youth Group. They plan to do a couple of events a month - canoeing, archery, hiking, movie nights, gaming, and service projects. The next meetup will be a hike and picnic at Fontenelle Forest on 6 July. Looking ahead there will be a guided tour of Morrill Hall hosted by Dr. Scott Gardner. Dr. Gardner gave the Darwin Day lecture for REASON last February "Collecting and Identifying all the Species on our Earth: Progress since Darwin and Wallace".
You'll definitely be hearing more from the Youth Group!
