Meet An Atheist!
Story by RJ Redden, Gregarious Greeter and Roving OA Reporter
Omaha Atheists held their first ever “Meet An Atheist” event on May 12th, at Caffeine Dreams. The intent of the event was to meet new people and discuss issues regarding the public perception of atheism. This event was held in response to our Adopt-A-Highway road sign being vandalized.
We worked hard to get people coming to the event. Personal emails were sent, one of our Board members met personally with pastors from different churches, and a flier was distributed around Omaha.
From Tom Gray, our Secretary: “OA hosted an energetic and vigorous talk with our Omaha neighbors, including members of the clergy and lay church leadership. Everyone involved enjoyed a frank and open discussion about their beliefs and the public perception of atheism. One minister noted that members of his church board voiced concerns that the atheists at our meetup might "proselytize" or be "militant" and angry atheists. We hope that last night's two-plus hours of friendly but engaging conversation will reassure them!”
It was our first "Meet An Atheist” event, but it won’t be our last. We will continue to spread awareness about atheists and nonbelievers in general. Come join us as we fight the good fight!
